readme.txt GSC Open File 2859 About this CD-ROM ----------------- This CD-ROM contains stream sediment and water data. These data have been compiled in two basic forms 1) raw data and 2) derived products. The raw data occurs in separate flatfiles in DBaseIV, Microsoft Excel97 and Access97, file formats. These standard file formats are easily imported into most spreadsheet, database and GIS computer programs. Products derived from these raw data consist of: data listings; summary statistics; and a series of single element plot maps as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. At the time of release of this open file, Adobe Acrobat Reader v4.05 is the most recent version. This program can be installed from this CD-ROM by double clicking the file ar405eng.exe, located in the \OF_2859\apps folder. It is recommended that this version of Adobe Acrobat Reader be used to properly view the PDFs on this CD-ROM. Earlier or later versions may not display the figures and tables as originally intended. The Intro Panel --------------- This is an 'Autoplay' CD-ROM for Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/2000. Inserting the CD into your CD-ROM drive will automatically launch Intro, a panel from which you can start Adobe Acrobat Reader. Directory Structure ------------------- This CD-ROM contains three subdirectories below the root \OF_2859 They are: \apps - Abobe Acrobat Reader v4.05 \data \raw_data - raw NGR data for OF 2859 \pdf - preface, data listing and statistics and data presentations (maps) as Abobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files \intro - files used by the Intro tour Data Presentation ----------------- Relative concentrations of elements in Yukon stream sediments and waters are illustrated with 'percentile' plots . Percentile plots illustrate where analytical values at individual sites are elevated relative to the entire population. Percentile plots use symbols to represent the position of individual analytical values relative to the entire set of data. Data are ranked in decreasing order of magnitude and divided into 100 equal parts. Given a sufficient range of values, six different symbols represent data subsets that fall below, in decreasing order of magnitude, the 100th, 98th, 95th, 90th, 75th and 50th percentile. In data populations where the range of values is low, typically silver, gold and tungsten, different percentile ranges may be used.
