HALF MILLION ACRES BURN

More than one-half million acres of Yukon land is burning today in reported 54 fires. About 200 men are employed with the forestry service fighting the blazes of which only three are designated as "under control."

In a counter clock-wise sort of fire survey, forestry officials this morning reported on the situation.

In the Whitehorse area, men are still employed at the Crestview site but 700 acre district is now well contained. A fire burning east of Lake Lebarge at Livingstone creek is not being fought however, air surveillance is being maintained.

In the Carmacks vicinity the large blaze which swept through the settlement of Pelly Crossing is heading northwest behind a front which is estimated to be 20 miles wide. To the east of Pelly Crossing one giant fire reported to cover 100,000 acres has jumped the Macmillan River and is heading towards Big Kalzas Lake. Two other flame stricken areas to the southeast are being allowed to burn uncontrolled near Tatlmain Lake and barefeed creek.

There are six fires burning in the Dawson City area all in the general locale of the Scroggie Creek, Selwyn River and Cripple Creek region. As they are threatening neither lives nor properly development they are being allowed to proceed in their paths but are receiving close scrutiny.

Two fires are burning near Beaver Creek both in "unprotected" zones. These are raging near Casino Creek and between the Klaza and Nestling Rivers.

At present there is no reliable information from Ross River district a condition attributed to bad radio contact as well as heavy smoke cover. It is known that the blaze which leveled parts of the Faro Townsite is still being fought with some crews diverted to the nearby sawmill. Forestry officials think there are about 19 fires in the area but this is only an estimate.

In Mayo men are working along ravished Stewart River in a locale north of the Kalmaw plateau and the fire there is considered to be controlled. And her blaze has broken out in this zone north of Lake Creek but at this stage is not being fought. Their fires of the many reported in the Watson Lake district are now termed "out".

Three fires of the many reported in the Watson Lake district are now termed "out." These were active on the Liard at the mouth of Rancheria River, at Labert Creek and in bush two miles north of the airport.

Only one fire in the Watson Lake Area is being combated. Both by men and equipment and by a water bomber. This blaze is a monstrous 14 by 6 miles and is moving east along the Heigelberg River towards Simpson Lake. Beyond this giant there are 14 additional flamed regions burning unattended at Frances Lake; 16 miles west of the Liard in Allen Creek; by Eckmann Creek; at Wasson Lake; the east side of Black River; the Junction of Black and Liard; between the Meister and Rancheria; two and possibly more at Hyland River; Simpson tower area near Frances Lake; along the N.W.T. Boundary; and two more in "unprotected zones" in the far east of the Yukon one on the Tropical River.

Only one fire in the Teslin area is being fought and this is located at Mile 17 on the Canol Road and has now been contained. Three more blazes near Rosy Lake, Boswell River east of Teslin River and on the Teslin road south of 100 Miles Creek are burning unattended.
